Description
The Milky Way viewed through the South Window in Arches National Park, Utah.
When we look at the milky way in the sky, we are looking inwards at our enormous galaxy. When thinking of the milky way as a spiral galaxy viewed from the top, our solar system is located near one of the outer edges. If you then rotated your viewing point from the top (where we see the galaxy as a spiral) to the side, looking at the galaxy on a flat plane, this is what you would see. This is what you DO see, from our vantage point here on Earth near the outer edge.
The bright area just above the window in this shot is the center of our galaxy, likely an enormous black hole that holds it all together. Our view of the black hole is obscured by stellar dust, though that stellar dust still leaves a beautiful visual full of color and structure.
When we look at the milky way in the sky we really are looking into the great beyond. Into our enormous galaxy and its billions of stars, planets, comets, and more.
