Description
Utah's Great Salt Lake is the gift that keeps on giving. Every time I head out there is something new and different.
On this occasion, out at beautiful Antelope Island, that gift was these amazing ice sheets. I believe these occur when fresh water from nearby Farmington Bay mixes with the salt water of the Great Salt Lake in extreme temperatures.
The fresh water floats to the top and freezes, however the salt water underneath resists freezing even in the extreme cold because of its high salt content. That water then moves around via its currents and breaks the ice apart on top, forming these sheets. At times, you can even see the sheets moving in the patterns of the currents below!
In this instance I mixed these ice sheets with one of Utah's famous winter sunsets and this was the result!
