Artist's Description

Another shot from my hike up Malan's Peak last winter.

I was actually planning to go up specifically for the blue hour shot (the previous image I shared a few days ago). Because that was my plan and because the weather was very gray and socked in I really took my time going up as I wasn't expecting there to be any kind of sunset.

Well, a few hundred feet short of the summit the sun suddenly broke through the clouds. The peak above me was blocking my view but I could just see color reflecting everywhere. I was exhausted from trudging through the snow on the steep trail for the last few hours but I knew I had to get up there. With the deep snow and steep slope it took me several minutes to get up those last few hundred yards even at 100% effort (maybe I should have turned it up to 110%).

Once I got there and saw the scene I knew it was worth it in spite of my exhaustion, and I immediately got to shooting. The light was fleeting, but I managed to get a few...

Growing up in humid, flat central Florida didn't leave a lot of opportunity for outdoor recreation other than trips to the beach. Despite growing up in what many would call a tropical paradise, it was always the mountains that called to me. At age 26 I finally made the move to take up permanent residence in the mountains of Chattanooga, Tennessee while my wife completed her residency. It was a great start, but as my wife's work concluded it was time to go bigger. So we packed our bags and headed out to Ogden, Utah where we now live amidst the Rocky Mountains (the Wasatch Range specifically).
